Microstructure and tribological properties of Ti borided by elecron beam evaporation technique

G. Kara, G. Purcek, Y. Atasoy, E. Bacaksiz,  ''Microstructure and tribological properties of Ti borided by elecron beam evaporation technique'', Journal of the Balkan Tribological Association Vol. 21, No 1, (2015) 24–37

Abstract:  In this work, boron was deposited on commercially pure titanium (grade-2) samples using electron beam evaporation (EBE) technique at various temperatures and time intervals. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses indicated that surface structure of borided samples were comprised of monolithic titanium diboride (TiB2) layer on the top and TiB whiskers towards the substrate. It was revealed that boriding by EBE resulted in a hard adhered surface structure after annealing especially at 900°C for 24 h. Dry wear test together with micro indentation study were performed after morphological analyses of boride layers. Boriding at 900°C for 24 h brought about a significant improvement in wear resistance of Ti, especially under low loads. The borided surface exhibited higher wear resistance along with higher friction coefficient as compared to as-received one under the same conditions.
