Abstract:  Effect of hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) on the friction characteristics of non-asbestos resin-based composites to be used brake pads was investigated. For this purpose, test specimens were prepared so that the total amount of solid lubricants (graphite plus h-BN) was set at 7 wt.%,  and other ingredients were not changed. Each composition prepared was subjected to friction tests using a pin-on-disk type test configuration according to the NF F 11-292 French standard. Addition of h-BN increased the friction coefficient values of resin-based composite. Friction coefficient values of that composite increased  up to 2.5% h-BN content, but thereafter it became stable. Also, h-BN addition  to the resin-based composite improved  working conformability  regarding the sound produced  by friction materials during braking. On the other hand, h-BN addition increased the average disc temperature during braking, but this increment was into the acceptable level according to the related standard.
