Abstract: In this study, the effect of friction stir processing (FSP) on mainly friction and wear properties of as-cast Al-12Si alloy was studied in detail. Severe plastic deformation imposed by FSP resulted in a considerable fragmentation of the needle-shaped eutectic silicon particles into the smaller ones, and improve the mechanical properties of Al-12Si alloy. The friction stir zone exhibited better mechanical properties as well as sliding wear resistance than the as-cast base alloy. Metallurgical and mechanical effects behind any improvement in friction and wear behavior of the alloy after FSP have been investigated in this study.
