Rotative (PIN-ON-DISC) Test Module - ASTM G99


With UTS TRIBOLOG, pin-on-disc and ball-on-disc friction and wear tests can be performed in different environments and test conditions by ASTM G99. This rotative module is provided with the main tribometer test bench, and some specific tests can be performed in dry, lubricated, corrosive, and high-temperature environments. For this purpose, special modules, containers, and environments are provided if needed.

  • Tests can be carried out between room temperature and 800 °C by providing an extra high-temperature module.
  • It has the option of working in dry, lubricated, and corrosive environments.
  • Optional tests can be carried out under different non-toxic atmospheric conditions.
  • Loading is applied by both dead weight and spring-assisted weight. Dead weight is applied to the loading and friction force measurement arm.
  • A spring-assisted mechanical loading system can also be provided if required. This applies the load sensitively by adjusting spring force manually. The load cell used for spring-assisted loading has a sensitivity.
  • The system is equipped with an auto-lock screw system for ball and pin positioning. In this way, very precise positioning on the rotating disk can be achieved.
  • Optionally, wear depth can be measured by a sensitive inductive distance sensor in contact with the loading arm.
  • The frictional force is measured by a load cell embedded in the loading arm and having double-sided sensing with high measurement precision.
  • The system offers a wide range of sizes for the ball and pin-type abrasives. With these, point, line, and spatial (circular, rectangular, and square) contact geometries can be provided.
  • A servo motor system with precise torque and speed control is used in the driving system.
  • Measured and calculated data are monitored on the interface in real time and stored in Excel for graphical representations.

Test Method


During tests, pin or ball-type abrasives or wear samples are pressed against a rotating disc. During or after the tests friction coefficient, friction force, wear rate, wear volume, test temperature and many other tribological parameters can be measured, stored, and graphed. With this basic module, tribological properties of materials such as alloys, ceramics, polymers, metals, coatings, solid lubricants, etc. can be characterized. These tests can be performed in dry, oily (lubricated), and corrosive environments and under different atmospheric conditions. It is also important that these tests can also be carried out between room temperature and 800 °C with an additional high-temperature test module to characterize the high-temperature tribological applications of the system.

Test Samples


With a pin-on-disk module (rotative motion module), pin or disc-shaped samples can mainly be used. For this purpose, a ball can be used both as an abrasive and as a wear sample. Disc type samples can also be used as wear samples or abrasive. Specially developed holders for samples are available. Generally, 100Cr6 balls are offered as abrasive. But some other hard abrasive balls such as WC and Alumina are also available. Surface parallelism and roughness level of abrasive plate type samples are important for the reliability and repeatability of the results.
