High Temperature Test Module


UTS TRIBOLOG provides tribological tests at elevated temperatures with an additional high-temperature testing module. This module was developed for the tribological characterization of materials to be used in environments where high temperature is operative such as internal combustion engines, steam turbines, jet engines, and power plants. This module is designed to be compatible with the rotary pin-on-disk test motion of the main test machine.

  • An oven-type heating system is used with the module The heating rate can be adjusted by a PID-controlled system.
  • Tribological tests can be performed between room temperature and 800°C with an accuracy of ±3 °C.
  • Materials with high thermal stability (superalloy) are used for parts in the heating oven.
  • High-temperature stable sensors are used.
  • Optionally, a wear depth sensor option is also available.

Test Method


This module mainly works with the rotative main motion type. However, the regular pin on disc sample binding sections is completely removed and replaced with a special section made of heat-resistance materials. The test specimens are placed on a special sample holder disc made of super alloys. Then the load is applied via the arm as in the rotative movement module, and the sensor measurements are done in the same way. In the lower part of the oven, there is a drive shaft and fans specially designed to prevent the heat generated in the furnace from spreading. The oven temperature setting is carried out by a PID controller which is placed on the module.

Test Samples


Pin or plate-shaped samples are used. Balls can be used both as abrasive and as wear samples. Special sample holders are available for holding plate-type samples. Generally, 100Cr6 balls are offered as abrasive. But other hard abrasive balls such as WC and Alumina are also available. Surface parallelism and roughness level of abrasive plate type samples are important for the reliability and repeatability of the results.
